For Trainees

First of all the Local Committee IAESTE BOKU welcomes you to a wonderful, great and interesting experience in Austria. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Just to give you an idea what to expect when you arrive, we would like to give you a brief overview and a bit of information:

Arrival

Usually, a member of IAESTE BOKU will meet you at the train station and bring you to your accommodation. If you arrive at the airport, we will normally give you instructions how to meet us. However, to make it easier (and first of all possible) for us to pick you up and to find you, please follow a few points:scared_boy

welcome_boy

  • Fill in the correct date and place of arrival in the “Confirmation of Acceptance”-form (N5b)
[If you’ve already done that, thanks a lot!:o)]
  • We will send you the contact information of the person who will pick you up.
Make sure you have that information with you!
  • If there are any (wanted or unwanted) changes to your plans, let us know as soon as possible!
  • At the airport or train station, look out for someone wearing an IAESTE-T-shirt or someone holding an IAESTE-sign :o)

Accommodation

There are several accommodations in Vienna, where we normally arrange a room to stay for you.

sleeping_boyAt the dorms “Pfeilgasse 4-6”, “Pfeilgasse 1A”, “Wiener Heim (Michaelerstraße)” and “Rudolfinum (Mayerhofgasse)” there are single rooms with WC and shower but also single rooms and double rooms with shared WC and shower and common kitchens. You will share your room with another exchange student from another part of the world or with an Austrian student. Sometimes you will find the bath facilities (WC, shower) on the floor to share it with other students. You need to bring your own bed linen and sheets as well as dishes. There is a possibility to rent these things straight from the hostel, but the hostel charges for that. If you do not want to carry all of these belongings with you, you can buy some cheap stuff in Vienna too. In all these dorms you will also find other IAESTE exchange students as well as exchange students from other organisations.

Another student hostel is “Haus Oberösterreich”. In this dorm you are going to share your room with another IAESTE exchange student or with an no_boy_but_sunAustrian student. There are shared WCs and bathrooms as well as a common kitchen, which is also a great meeting point to get to know other students and exchange students. It is a very cosy student hostel so it might happen that you can borrow bed linen, sheets and dishes from other people who are staying there, but if you want to be on the safe side, take it with you.

You can find more information at:

There is internet-access in every student dorm, so if you bring your own laptop, you can get internet access. It is also possible to buy cheap prepaid-cards for mobile phones. So bring your mobile with you as well.
If your working place is not in Vienna or too far to reach it from Vienna everyday, we will organise another place to stay for you. Do not worry about that - we will send you all the necessary information you need to know. If the company arranges lodging for you, we will give you individual information for your case as well.

Workno_boy_but_work

handshake_boyOn your first day of work an IAESTE-member will accompany you to your working place, show you how to get there with public transport and help you filling out some paper/registration forms. Companies will almost certainly require you to get an account at a local bank, but we will assist you there as well.

Summer Reception

bbq_boyAs already mentioned, normally there will be other students, trainees and IAESTE-members around.
In addition, IAESTE Austria will organize special events at the weekends (trips to other cities in Austria, rafting, hiking,...) and the local committees will organize meetings and gettogethers (cinema, sports, visiting a “Heuriger” (...you’ll find out what that is...), barbecues, and so on). If you want to stay in contact with other trainees in Austria, we offer you a mailing-list-service.

The events are posted at the IAESTE Austria-Homepage (check it regularly).

A few final remarks

  • It might be helpful to bring a couple of passport-photographs (e.g. for getting an ID for reduced train tickets).
  • Getting an international student-ID and bringing it with you will get you some reduced entry fees at cinemas, museums, discotheques, public baths and so on.
  • A sleeping bag can be useful when joining us on an outdoor weekend or when staying somewhere.
  • It might be good (and convenient) to bring your own basic cutlery.
  • In case you want to visit other countries in Europe, you might want to check in advance, which countries your visa allows you to travel to.

Here you can find some useful and informative homepages

Information about Vienna & living in Vienna

Upon arrival, you will receive a “welcome-package” in which you will find a lot of useful information about Austria, Vienna and living in Vienna which we cannot all cover in this little letter (city map, timetables for public transport, useful phone numbers, office hours …).
